A Weltacker for Graz
The Styrian:field:Graz – a project of the Wasserschutzbauern, was opened in June 2024. The field is located at the Grottenhof Agricultural College on Krottendorfer Strasse in the GenussHauptstadt (Gourmet Capital).
The local field was laid out in the shape of the ‘globe’ and is intended to reflect its circular economy and the proportional needs of humanity. This project is intended to show how much we actually consume, how valuable our soils are and how our local agriculture sustains us and our lavish lifestyle. Everyone should think about the saying ‘He who does not honour the farmer is not worthy of bread!’
The educational work on the Weltacker is organised in cooperation with the seminar farmers. Free tours are offered to schoolchildren in Graz, financed by the city of Graz. In this way, our children can visit, explore and experience ‘their 2000 m²’ so that we can help them to change their view of our world.
In addition to the knowledge we want to impart, there are various stations for interactive learning and understanding. We have created a root window and a ‘dinner is served’ station. An arable crop herbarium is planned but not yet implemented. Furthermore, there are show jars with a wide variety of grains/seeds to get to know and touch crops, and an oversized vegetable memory game.
