Weltacker Innsbruck

In February 2022, a park in the middle of Innsbruck was plowed and transformed into a world field. Surrounded by footpaths, in a traffic-calmed zone, the Weltacker is now in the immediate vicinity of several schools, many private houses, a soccer pitch and other sports areas. Many people pass by the field every day and can observe it throughout the year.

Without having planned it precisely, the parking area is exactly as large as required. Even if it were desired, the world field could not be enlarged. All adjacent areas are used for other purposes and are partially sealed. Unintentionally and unplanned, a perfect depiction of the finite nature of the soil and the limits of human provision has been achieved.

Also a good coincidence: the park offers a little more space for externally managed flower strips, our edge installations, places to linger and workshops. Primary school pupils, pensioners, secondary school classes, inclusion projects, tourism businesses, Erasmus groups … all target groups find their way to the Weltacker workshops.

Cooperations

The Innsbrucker Weltacker comes to life through the diverse collaborations that make it so colorful. After-school groups that look after flower strips, associations that set up nesting aids or hand over special seeds, the botanical garden that prefers exotic plants and much more. The project also tries to create a cultural experience in a broader sense on the field and also organizes festivals, exhibitions, theater and much more.

Volunteer team

Every week from April to October, volunteers meet at the field to work together for several hours. Here, people, backgrounds and experiences mix wildly with one another, creating a fun group of friends who face the challenges of tending the field by hand together.

The Weltacker Innsbruck is run by feld:schafft. feld:schafft is a cooperative oriented towards the common good with the aim of consistently promoting a resource-conserving economy and the avoidance of food waste in the long term, thereby raising social awareness and initiating change.

feld:schafft offers a Tyrol-wide educational program that addresses topics such as food waste, food appreciation and climate change. The Weltacker fits perfectly into this program. Excursions, garden days, plant sponsorships, action days and much more are organized on site. In addition, feld:schafft offers catering services and products cooked from leftover and surplus produce. If the harvest on the world field is too big for all the helping hands, it is picked up in the kitchen and refined for the next catering.
