Welcome to Weltacker Switzerland
How much arable land would be available to every single person if we were to distribute all the arable land in the world fairly? It is around 2000m² per person. A lot has to grow on it: bread, rice, potatoes, fruit, vegetables, oil, sugar… but also all the food for the animals whose meat, milk and eggs we consume, which comes from the fields and not from meadows and pastures. In addition, cotton for jeans, tobacco for smokers and, on top of that, bio-gas or bio-diesel and renewable raw materials for industry. A world field shows these 2000m² as a model and thus offers a sensual and vivid experience that encourages reflection and discussion.
World fields in Switzerland
There are currently three world fields in Switzerland: on the fields in Attiswil and Zollikofen near Bern, around 50 of the world’s most important crops are grown on 2000m², true to scale to their global cultivation area. The world field in Nuglar shows what solidarity agriculture can grow on 2000m². A fourth world field is currently under construction in Zurich. Each Weltacker is a walk-in learning space that makes connections understandable and provides food for thought about the closely interwoven worlds of food, agriculture and the environment. The Weltacker teams offer hands-on learning and understanding for school classes and groups of all kinds. The content of the professionally run Weltacker School for school classes is aligned with Curriculum 21 and is strongly skills-oriented.
